ARNIS

Arnis in Richmond, VA

Here at Aamerican Colleges of Jiu-Jitsu and Karate, we work hard to ensure that our students have access to a broad variety of martial arts styles, because we believe that a well rounded martial arts education is immensely important. Every style offers different and unique lessons, which is why we offer classes from skilled instructors in everything from Karate to Aikido. One of our most popular options is Arnis, also known as Eskrima, Kali, or the Filipino martial arts, which is a weapons-based martial art that uses single and double stick techniques.

Arnis was developed over centuries of tribal warfare in the Philippines, and influenced by many different cultures, including Hindus, Chinese, Malays, Muslims, the Spanish, and more. Arnis arts are blade and weapons based, with techniques that were constantly refined and tested via tribal combat. But, as with any weapons-based martial arts, Arnis places emphasis on versatile and effective empty hand techniques derived from strategies, techniques, and methods used with the weapons.

In modern Arnis practices, the classical training methods have been modified for safety, such as using sticks in lieu of real blades, while the combat strategies and philosophies are continuously adapted for effective weapon and empty-hand applications in modern western environments. Modern Arnis characteristics include the use of weapons from the very beginning of training. The primary weapon used here at Aamerican Colleges of Jiu-Jitsu and Karate is the rattan stick, also known as a cane, baston, or baton. Our sticks for Arnis training vary in size, but are usually about 28 inches in length. We teach both single and double stick techniques, placing greater emphasis on single stick techniques and unarmed defenses against weapons.
